afghanistan. so i'd like to know a little more about why the secretary said this, and what he's basing it on. heather: peter, that's what i was wondering about when i heard this over the weekend, these messages are always crafted very carefully. why send this message now and i'm wondering to what extent it might have been a message to president karzai in afghanistan, hey, we're not going there be there -- going to be there forever, get your house in order or a message to the american public? >> i think it's talking to a lot of people. obviously people in the united states because the president has just decided to withdraw 33,000 troops over the next year from afghanistan. i think he's trying to wind down that war in afghanistan. that's what the president wants. i think you're right, there is also an international audience around the world, and they may also be able to tell al-qaeda or folks who might join al-qaeda that hey, it's not really worth joining up because the fact of the matter is we've got you on the run now. and i do agree with him that it's worthwhile, putting as much pressure on

with an assassination in afghanistan. the powerful half-brother of afghan president hamid karzai was murdered this morning. officials say that ahmed wali karzai was shot to death by one of his own bodyguards at his home in kandahar. cbs news correspondent mandy clark is there. >> god willing there will be an answer of pain and suffering on the people, and peace and security will be implemented in our country so that no other afghan family will go through such pains that we all have suffered. >> reporter: ahmed wali karzai was a controversial figure. he was widely seen as the de facto governor of kandahar province, giving orders to public officials behind the scenes, but more importantly in this society, solving tribal disputes. over the years there were persistent reports that he was involved in drug trafficking. in an interview last year with cbs news, he dismissed those allegations. >> no one came up with any proof that i am involved in any illegal activity. >> reporter: the security situation here is mixed. the taliban do not operate freely in the city, but have launched occasional spectac

at the white house. >> heather: defense secretary leon panetta traveling to afghanistan. he says that the u.s. is targeting up to 20 key leaders of the al-qaeda based on information gathered during that raid on osama bin laden's compound in pakistan and terror group is now within reach. david is live from kabul, afghanistan. >> reporter: the duly appointed defense secretary arrived here a few hours ago to find out for himself the situation on the ground here. he has brief talks with military officials including david petraeus and then he went straight into a meeting with the afghan president hamid karzai. their discussions included the transition of nato held areas of afghan control starting in july but also the drawdown of u.s. troops over the next year. he says he hopes to drive the taliban into peace talks over that period. he also said he was upbeat about prospects of defeating al-qaeda if they can capture and kill remaining leaders. >> i would say somewhere around 10 to 20 key leaders, between pakistan, yemen, so somalia and north africa, if we can go after them, i think we really can

at bay. now, to afghanistan where five people were killed today in a blast inside a mosque. the attack was carried out by a man who hit explosives in his turban. it happened in kandahar during a memorial service to president karzai's brother was assassinated this week. for more of the president brothers and the governor were in kandahar. >> another deadly attack in the heart of kandahar. top afghan officials were attending a prayer service for the president's half brother when the bomber struck. elite police units secured the area. among the dead, an influential cleric. a man opposed to the taliban. like so many other tax, the brunt of it was borne by ordinary afghans. more people are also dying from nato air strikes. late on wednesday, six villages were attacked among the victims, women and children. it led to a wave of anger. protests have taken place pressing for the withdrawal of western forces. that is about to happen imminently. some are wondering, at what cost? starting next week and over the next several months, thousands of nato troops have begun to a withdrawal. handing over
